Trip Overview

The Kailash Mansarovar via Lhasa is a remarkable journey that includes Kathmandu, Lhasa, and a hike up Mount Kailash, providing ample time for acclimatization.

The Kailash Mansarovar via Lhasa tour begins in Kathmandu with a day of rest. Next, you’ll enjoy a scenic flight to Lhasa, where you’ll spend three nights exploring landmarks like the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and the bustling Barkor Market. From Lhasa, you’ll drive through central Tibet, visiting Yamdrok Tso Lake, and the historic towns of Gyantse and Shigatse, before reaching Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash.

This journey offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and Tibetan landscapes, with opportunities to witness Buddhist ceremonies, visit local Tibetan homes, and learn about Tibetan culture. You’ll complete a 3-day pilgrimage around Mount Kailash, known as the kora or parikrama, before returning to Kathmandu.

Importance of Mount Kailash: Mount Kailash is considered one of the most sacred sites in the world, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon practitioners. For Hindus, it is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the god of destruction and regeneration. In Buddhist tradition, Mount Kailash is associated with the spiritual energy of the Buddha Demchok. Jains view it as the site where their first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha, attained liberation. The mountain’s unique shape and the fact that it remains unclimbed add to its mystique and reverence.

Kailash Kora (Circumambulation): The Kailash Kora, or circumambulation, is a sacred pilgrimage around Mount Kailash. Covering about 52 kilometers, this trek is undertaken by devotees who believe that completing it will bring spiritual merit and wash away sins. The kora is performed in a clockwise direction, and it involves traversing rugged terrain at high altitudes, which is a significant spiritual and physical challenge. For many, the kora is a transformative experience, offering deep spiritual insight and a profound sense of connection to the divine.

Significance of Lake Manasarovar: Lake Manasarovar, located near Mount Kailash, is considered one of the holiest lakes in the world. Hindus believe that the lake was created by Lord Brahma and is a place where one can attain spiritual purification. Buddhists and Jains also regard the lake as sacred, symbolizing the purity and calm of the mind. Pilgrims often take a ritual dip in the lake’s pristine waters, which is believed to cleanse the soul and aid in the attainment of enlightenment. The serene surroundings and the lake’s spiritual significance make it a central part of the pilgrimage journey. Check out our  Best of Tibet trip too.

Additional Information

This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.

If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.
