Is this trip Right for me?
- If you want to get the best view of the Himalayas, including the highest peak on Earth, learn more about the Sherpa people, and visit the Khumbu Glacier, then the Everest Base Camp trek is perfect for you.
- Trekking in the Himalayas is not like walking in the park. It involves many ups and downs, reaching altitudes of over 5,500 meters, and we will spend a few nights above 4,000 meters. You need to be in good health to participate, but the rewards are worth it. If you’re up for a challenge, the Everest Base Camp trek is ideal.
- The weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, and flights to or from Lukla are often delayed or canceled due to weather conditions. Please be prepared for this mentally and financially. If you’re flexible, the Everest Base Camp hike is right for you.
- The EBC trek includes 12 days of trekking, with daily hikes of 5-8 hours, at altitudes ranging from 3,000 to 5,500 meters. Depending on the time of year, the weather can be harsh. If you’re ready to cope with this, then it’s the right trek for you.
- The trekking lodges, known as teahouses, are very basic, especially at high altitudes. Shared bathrooms and toilets are common, but in lower villages, you may have an attached bathroom with a hot shower. If comfort isn’t a big deal for you, then this is the right trek for you.
- The Everest Base Camp trek is very popular, and you’ll encounter many other trekkers and groups on the trail and at the teahouses. If you prefer a less crowded trek, consider the Langtang Gosainkund or Manaslu trek. But if you’re okay with a busy trail to reach the foot of the highest mountain on Earth, then this is the right trek for you.

Holiday Information
Joining Arrangements & Transfers
All clients traveling to Kathmandu will be met at the airport by a TTG representative who will arrange the transfer to the group hotel. Look for our logo at the arrival gate.
Accommodation in Everest Base Camp Trek
In Kathmandu, the group will stay in a hotel as mentioned in the itinerary, or similar categories. We choose hotels not far from downtown, mostly in central Thamel, for easy access to shopping, dining, and other attractions.
During the Everest Base Camp trek, we stay in lodges or tea houses. These Nepalese trekking lodges, also known as ‘tea-houses,’ are simple, friendly, and atmospheric. As they are far from the nearest road, they are basic since everything must be carried up by porters or animals. Most lodges have heated dining areas, often attractively decorated. Bedrooms are basic, unheated, with wooden beds and foam mattresses. You will need a sleeping bag. The lodges have shared washing and toilet facilities. Some lodges offer solar-powered showers (charged at $5 per shower) and battery charging facilities (charged per hour, $1-2). Staying at the lodges is a great way to meet fellow hikers and locals. Most accommodation is on a twin-sharing basis, and solo travelers will room with another single traveler of the same sex. In some places near the passes, we might stay in multi-bedded rooms due to limited options. In Kathmandu, single rooms are available for an additional cost, but on the trek, only shared rooms are available.
Solo Travelers
Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation, and we do not charge a single supplement. Single travelers are paired in twin or multi-share accommodation with someone of the same sex. If you prefer your own single room, a single supplement is available, but only in Kathmandu, not on the trek.
Flight from Ramechhap
Flights to and from Lukla may be operated out of Ramechhap Airport to alleviate congestion at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. This requires an early wake-up on day 3 to drive the 130 kilometers (approximately 5 hours) from Kathmandu to Ramechhap Airport. A private vehicle transfer will be provided at no additional cost. Your local leader will give you the most up-to-date information regarding flight delays.
Alternative Itinerary During Flight Cancellation
Weather conditions in the Himalayas can change rapidly, often resulting in changes to our intended itineraries. Flights, especially between Kathmandu and Lukla, are often delayed or canceled due to poor weather. Our contingency plans are as follows:
- Day 3: Attempt to board our booked fixed-wing plane as per the itinerary. If canceled, return to our hotel in Kathmandu for an additional night.
- Day 4: Attempt again to board our booked fixed-wing plane. If canceled, we will try to charter a helicopter to transport the group, provided helicopters are available and weather permits flying to Lukla. Travelers will need to use their emergency funds to cover the cost of the chartered helicopter, which could be up to $500. If we reach Lukla on day 4, we will follow the same itinerary to Everest Base Camp but descend one day faster to catch our return flight from Lukla on day 15.
Food on Everest Base Camp Trek
Typical meals in the Everest region lodges include Nepali dishes and some international cuisine like pizza and chips. We encourage you to eat local food whenever possible to support the local economy, and these foods are always fresh. We order meals in advance, and the trekking leader will suggest what is safe and good to eat. Breakfast usually includes porridge, eggs, and bread; lunch is a simple meal like noodles or rice; and dinner is two courses consisting of soup and a main meal. All drinks, desserts, and beverages are extra. In Kathmandu, breakfast is included. We recommend staying vegetarian during the trek for better food safety.
A Typical Day in Everest Base Camp Hiking
Shortly after first light, you will wake up, pack your kitbag, and prepare for the day. After breakfast, we set off on the day’s trek. We typically reach our lunch stop by mid-day after about 3-4 hours of trekking. Lunch is taken at tea houses along the route, and this is a time for relaxing, reading, and enjoying the sun. Porters usually catch up with the group during lunch. The afternoon walk is generally shorter than the morning session. On arrival at the lodge, the trekking leader will organize everyone’s room. After checking in, you may relax with a drink on the terrace before dinner. Dinner is in the dining room, which usually has some form of heating. This is a great time for socializing and sharing experiences from the trek. By 9:00 pm, most trekkers will have retired to bed, and by 10:00 pm, the lodge will be quiet.
Group Leader & Support Staff
The group will be led by an experienced English-speaking local leader. On the Base Camp trek, porters will carry luggage.
Spending Money
Approximately $500-600 (or equivalent in other currencies) should be sufficient for personal expenses, including tips for guides and porters, and for drinks and meals in the city. It is not necessary to obtain local currency (Nepali rupees) before departure. Sterling, US Dollars, and Euros are equally acceptable for exchange in Nepal. We recommend carrying travel money in cash since most will be exchanged on arrival in Kathmandu. ATMs in Kathmandu dispense rupees. During the trek, you can buy snacks, chocolate, tea, coffee, soft drinks, and beer, which become more expensive as you gain altitude.
Guidance on Tipping
Tipping is the accepted way of saying ‘thank you’ for good service. Tips are not part of the wages of your guides, porters, and trek crew but are very much appreciated. Tipping is voluntary and should be based on good service. Normally, tips are given at the end of the trek. Most groups give tips with a bit of ceremony (or a party) on the last evening to mark the end of the trip. We recommend about 10% of your trip cost for tips. Many people also like to donate equipment to the porters and trek staff. Boots, gloves, hats, scarves, socks, head-torches, and trekking poles are highly prized. Your local trip leader will arrange for a fair distribution among the trek crew.
Baggage Allowance
Your baggage on the Everest Base Camp trek will be carried by porters. The packed weight of your trek bag should be no more than 13kg. It is possible to leave clothes or other items not required on the trek at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Altitude in Everest Base Camp Trek
This trek involves high altitudes, reaching over 5,500 meters. The human body can adapt to a wide range of altitudes, but it’s important to follow some simple rules to acclimatize successfully. Our itinerary considers this carefully to ensure proper acclimatization. Here you can find further information about Altitude Sickness.

Preparing for Your Everest Trek
It makes a lot of sense to spend some time before coming on the trekking holiday, getting some additional exercise. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. We suggest that you adopt a weekly exercise regime leading up to your trip. Regular hiking in the hill country is the best training but jogging, squash and swimming are also good for developing cardiovascular fitness and stamina. Note that you will encounter a lot of steps on the Everest trail while ascending and you might wish to tailor your exercise to take this into account. Whatever your preparation you should make time to spend at least a few days prior to your trip making long walks in a hilly country. It is also a good idea to do some reading about the country and the culture of the local people before you embark on an Everest holiday. You can explore our blog page and read Everest base camp trek: a complete beginner guide, on which we have tried to give most of the information you need to know before planning for Everest base camp trek.
Climate in Everest region
October to November and March to May are the best times for the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal. These months either side of the summer monsoon season are neither too hot in the foothills nor too cold in the higher elevations and they offer the best conditions for trekking. Pre-monsoon is the best time to see the colourful blooms of the rhododendron at lower elevations. The post-monsoon months usually offer the clearest skies and the most settled weather. At either of these periods you will encounter a wide range of daytime temperatures during your Everest trip from approximately 25ºC in Kathmandu to approximately 14ºC at 3000 metres, and approximately -5ºC at Everest Base Camp. The ‘real feel’ temperature in the middle of the day will be much warmer than this but at night in the rarefied air the temperatures plummet and you can expect to experience overnight temperatures below freezing anywhere above 3000 metres. In the Everest Base Camp, Chola pass – the nighttime temperatures may reach –10ºC or exceptionally, below this. Extended periods of rain or snow are very unlikely outside of the monsoon period but short-lived storms can and do occur.

Trip Reviews
I’ve now done two treks with Trekking Team and they have been really amazing. They professionally organized and scheduled a great plan for my level of fitness and my availability, and the guides were very knowledgeable, safety conscious, helpful, and really fun to trek with! They really took care of everything, not just the trek itself. They made it really easy to get into nepal, get around in kathmandu, go sightseeing, shop for the best gear, find good food, follow the local custom and understand the culture, and they chose great hotels to stay at as well.I’ll definitely go with them again for my next trek!
The best family trek to Everest Base Camp!
What an amazing trek in the mountains with Trekking Team Group! we are a family of 5 and Shreehari, Ram, Dhawa and Chandra took such wonderful care of us. we have 3 youngish children (ages 13, 11 and 11) and they brought us such a memorable family experience that had a safety focus which we appreciated. Ram was a patient and informative guide, showing us the wonders of the trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and pointing us nuances and subtleties along the way that we would never have noticed without an experienced and caring guide. Dhawa and Chandra lugged our families baggage and shared their experience and family stories, we were so grateful for their presence and hard work. Shree organized and managed the challenges of domestic flights despite complicated weather and COVID obstacles. Even after return to Kathmandu and end of the trek he continued to support us with charter flight information and liaison with travel companies to smooth our departure from Nepal. We’d recommend the services of Trekking Team Group to anyone coming to the area and hope to return someday to hike some more with them!
Had a fabulous time trekking to Everest Basecamp. Birman was our guide and he’s absolutely ‘lovely’ and our porters Hom and Chandra were absolutely ‘lovely’ too. I’d like to thank Raju for driving us around Kathmandu, he’s adorable and I also want to thank Shreehari for arranging our wonderful experience. You are all so ‘lovely’ and I hope to see you all again. I highly recommend all these guys, thank you for our amazing trip ♥️♥️♥️♥️
The staff are excellent! Drivers, porters, guides and management all strived to deliver a great experience that was delivered with sincerity and friendliness in true Nepalese fashion. I would highly recommend their excellent services to anyone considering travelling in Nepal.
Everest Base Camp – Awesome Adventure with Brilliant Birman!
Trekking Team Group are a fantastic local trekking company if you’re planning a holiday or trek in Nepal and, simply put, Birman Tamang is the best trekking guide this side of Everest. We booked a 20 day trek to Everest Base Camp during April 2019 through Inspiring Vacations. The overall package was initially compiled and coordinated by Inspiring Vacations (including flights, itinerary, etc), though once we hit the ground in Kathmandu it was Shreehari and his team at Trekking Team Group that managed the logistics of our trek, accommodation, meals, transport, etc. Shreehari and his team were always friendly and professional, and always willing to go above and beyond to ensure we felt comfortable, informed and happy. It was comforting to know we were in the hands of a local trekking company who not only had many years of experience, but who also provided support to local communities and schools through various initiatives. We only had a small group (3 people), which was great.Birman Tamang was our guide for the trek, and I can’t imagine having a better guide. Birman picked us up from Kathmandu airport (welcoming us with genuine enthusiasm) and stayed with us through to our return to the airport 20 days later. He has a great wealth of knowledge about not only trekking in the Himalayas but also Nepal, it’s history, religion, culture, food and people. Birman’s positivity and enthusiasm were seemingly endless and highly infectious. He’s very patient and quite observant, so we always felt at ease along the trek and never rushed. He’s also really flexibile and seems to have contacts in most of the lodges and tea houses along the trek, so it often felt like we got preferential treatment over other trekkers. More than once, I spied Birman picking up rubbish along the trails and putting it in the nearest bin.Our two porters Doulashin and Sunkumar were fantastic, always waiting for us with a smile at the end of the day’s trek. There’s no way we could have made it up and back without them. Our package included some local sightseeing in Kathmandu before our trek to Everest. In addition, we had a few days once we’d returned from the mountain to relax and explore the local Balthali village and Bhaktapur areas. While we were somewhat exhausted from our journey up and down the mountain, this was a nice way to unwind after our long trek, and a welcome change to the dust and frantic activity of central Kathmandu. I highly recommend TTG and Birman as your local trekking team and guide if you’re planning a visit to Nepal. They’re awesome.
We did Mt.Everest base camp and Island Peak over 14days. Good and very experienced guides. Climbing guides had been on Mt.Everest 8 times. Very focused on safety. Base camp Island Peak impressed me with amazing food & service. Will come back soon with other group!

Additional Information
This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.
If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.
