Trip Overview

The Kaligandaki Valley trek  also known as lower mustang is a stunning journey along a historic trade route connecting Nepal and Tibet. It features diverse landscapes and rich cultural experiences, including walking through the world’s deepest gorge.

The Kaligandaki Valley trek also known as lower Mustang trek is a key trade route connecting with Tibet and offers a rich and varied adventure with its network of lodges and tea houses. It’s a fantastic way to experience diverse landscapes and cultural highlights, including walking through the world’s deepest gorge.

On this trek, you’ll enjoy stunning scenery, from lush rhododendron forests to high desert landscapes. You’ll also have the chance to explore Kathmandu’s heritage sites, enjoy a boat ride on Phewa Lake, and catch a sunrise at Poon Hill for breathtaking 180-degree views of the Himalayas. Other highlights include a relaxing hot spring bath at Tatopani, experiencing Thakali culture in Marpha, visiting the ancient village of Lupra, and paying homage at the Muktinath Temple for spiritual cleansing.

Along the way, you’ll see yak caravans carrying salt from Tibet and mule trains transporting grain from Nepal, offering a glimpse into traditional trade practices.

If you want to avoid the crowds, winter treks are a good option, but be prepared for cold temperatures, especially around Muktinath. Trekking during the monsoon is also possible, but be aware of the risk of landslides and frequent cloud cover that might hide the mountain views.

Some parts of the trek will involve jeep rides due to the rough dirt roads, which is more practical than trekking through those sections. If you  want to avoid the jeep trail then try our Langtang trek or  Annapurna Base Camp trek.

Drive to Hile, trek to Ulleri (2050m/6725ft)

After breakfast, we’ll drive for about 2.5 hours to Hile, where our trek begins. We’ll first drive through Nayapool and stop at Birethanti, a village by the Modi River, to check permits. Then, we’ll continue to Hile, making stops to enjoy scenic viewpoints and waterfalls along the way.

Once we arrive in Hile, we’ll start our trek. Hile is a picturesque village, and from there we’ll continue to Tikhedhunga for lunch. After breakfast, we’ll start our trek, beginning with an ascent to Banthanti, where we’ll stop for tea. From there, we’ll continue uphill gradually until we reach a stream with a lovely waterfall. The trail then takes us through rhododendron forests and small settlements, where we’ll break for lunch. After lunch, we’ll trek further uphill until we reach Ghorepani. In the spring months (March-April), this route is especially vibrant with blooming rhododendrons, making the forest incredibly colorful.

Once we arrive in Ghorepani, we’ll check into our hotel and take in the stunning mountain views. Ghorepani offers breathtaking sights of the Himalayas. We’ll go to bed early tonight as we need to wake up at 4 a.m. tomorrow for a hike to Poon Hill to catch an amazing sunrise.

After soaking in the view, head back to the hotel for breakfast.

Post-breakfast, we’ll trek downhill all the way to Tatopani, where you can relax in the popular hot springs, though it can be a bit crowded. The trek from Ghorepani to Tatopani passes through several villages with great views of Nilgiri and stunning landscapes. Although the trek is a bit long, it’s mostly downhill until we reach the Kaligandaki River, making it manageable. In the evening, you can enjoy a soothing bath in the hot springs. Trek to Muktinath (3802m/12473ft)

Today, we’ll reach the highest point of our trek. Instead of taking the less pleasant dirt road, we’ll follow a different route via Jhong, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Dhaulagiri mountain range and glimpses of Upper Mustang. Previously, we couldn’t take this route due to permit restrictions for Upper Mustang, but now it’s accessible for this section.

The trek today is mostly uphill through a dry, desert-like landscape with some greenery. You’ll pass through charming Thakali villages where you can immerse yourself in local culture. After about 5-6 hours of trekking, we’ll arrive at Muktinath Temple, also known as the Temple of Salvation. We’ll visit the temple and stay in a teahouse. This area is more crowded than other parts of the trek, as many pilgrims from Nepal and India come to pay their respects at Muktinath.

Next, we’ll trek downhill to Lupra, a traditional village nestled in the Pand Khola Gorge between Kagbeni and Jomsom. Lupra is unique with its traditional Thakali houses and a monastery worth visiting.

After exploring Lupra and taking in the natural beauty of Thak Khola, we’ll have lunch and then continue our trek to Jomsom. The final stretch of the trek will be on a road, as we join the Jomsom to Muktinath road. If you prefer, we can catch a jeep for a short 15-minute ride; otherwise, we can keep trekking to Jomsom. We’ll spend our last night there, celebrating our journey in the Himalayas.

Early in the morning, we’ll catch a flight to Pokhara to avoid the strong winds that usually pick up after noon. Upon arriving in Pokhara, you might have to wait a bit for your room since check-in is typically after 2 PM. In the meantime, you can leave your luggage at the hotel and use the opportunity to do some last-minute shopping, enjoy a meal, or take care of anything you missed earlier. Additional Information

This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.

If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.

What makes this trip different ?

Trekking Team Groups is one of the main supporters of Ambe Foundation, a non-political and non-profit social organization. We contribute our support to the remote village of Nuwakot and different schools like Gramin Devi, Khumbeshwori through donation, sponsorship and partnership in various projects. For details click here what we do and why we do?

Donation

Trekking Team Group donates a percentage of business profits to the foundation on a yearly basis, which supports the ongoing maintenance cost required for Gramin Devi and Khumbeshwori school, a community-based school in Nuwakot.

Sponsorship

One of the major activities of Ambe foundation is the children sponsorship program, which is conducted with full collaboration with Trekking Team Group.

Partnership (Volunteering Program)

The Ambe Volunteer Program, organised by Ambe Foundation and Trekking Team Group, aims to mobilize teams of experts and interested individuals as an effective and economic measure in providing the human capital for education, health and community development in Nuwakot District.
