The High Passes of Everest trek is a superbly challenging adventure that completes a high-level circuit of the major valleys in the Khumbu region of Nepal. This trek features three high passes: Renjo La (5,388m/17,513ft), Cho La (5,380m/17,650ft), and Kongma La (5,535m/18,159ft), linking the valleys of Thame, Gokyo, Khumbu, and Chukung. Along each valley, trekkers can ascend walk-up peaks for classic views of Everest and other Himalayan giants.

Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, you’ll receive a traditional warm welcome from our airport representative. Following a brief orientation at the hotel about your itinerary, enjoy a typical welcome dinner in the evening.

Kathmandu sightseeing

Your day starts with breakfast at your hotel. Afterward, you’ll go sightseeing in Kathmandu Valley. First, visit Swayambhunath, also called the Monkey Temple, perched on a hill. It offers amazing views of the mountains and Kathmandu. This ancient Buddhist stupa with its tall white dome and golden spire is a must-see for Buddhists and tourists.

Then, head to Pashupatinath, a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Next to it is a place where Hindus cremate their deceased loved ones, adding a solemn aspect to your visit.

Finally, explore Patan Durbar Square, known for its old temples and palaces that showcase Nepal’s rich history and architecture.

Fly to Lukla & trek to Phakding (2650m/8694ft)

You’ll embark on a breathtaking flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Upon arrival, meet your trekking crew and enjoy a brief tea break. Your trek begins by heading north into the Dudhkoshi Valley, descending from a small plateau into a lush, forested landscape. Today’s trek is relatively easy and short, although the change in altitude from Kathmandu may pose a slight challenge.

After lunch, continue north towards Phakding, crossing several streams along the way. Finally, you’ll arrive at Phakding (2650m), where you’ll spend your first night. This settlement offers tantalizing views, marking the beginning of your adventure in the Himalayas.

Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3440m/11246ft)

Hike to Namche Bazaar through farmland and settlements. You will follow the Dudh Kosi northwards. This day’s walk takes you through magnificent forests of rhododendron, giant fir and magnolia trees. You will cross the west fork of the river, the Bhote Kosi, and start the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. Namche is the largest Sherpa village which is called as Gateway to Mount Everest. Namche is a prosperous Sherpa village and an important trading center as well. Locals from various villages gather during the weekly bazaar and sell fresh foodstuffs.

Acclimatization day/explore around Namche and Synboche (3780m/12401ft)

Take a rest day in Namche Bazaar and explore the nearby villages of Khumjung and Syangboche. A hike to the Everest View Hotel is highly recommended, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee with an incredible view of Everest.

Use this day to acclimatize, preparing yourself physically and mentally for the trek ahead. Staying active, even on rest days, helps with acclimatization. You can also visit the Namche Museum, which offers a wealth of information about the region and adds to the richness of your experience.

Trek to the Sherpa settlement of Thame (3820m/12532ft)

After breakfast, you’ll begin your trek from Namche Bazaar to Thame. Thame is a Sherpa village known for being the birthplace of many famous climbers, including Tenzing Norgay, who first climbed Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, and Appa Sherpa, who holds the record for the most Everest ascents (21 times).

Thame is the largest village in the valley and offers a chance to meet climbers who might share their Everest stories over coffee. Take the opportunity to learn about their culture and traditions. You’ll also visit the beautiful Thame Monastery and spend time exploring the village.

Trek to Lumde (4380m/14370ft)

The trek from Thame to Lumde is a scenic. Starting in the tranquil village of Thame, you’ll pass through pine and rhododendron forests and the small village of Thamte. The route offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks and traditional Sherpa settlements.

The climb to Lumde becomes steeper, traversing yak pastures and rocky terrain. At 4,380 meters, Lumde provides basic accommodations and a peaceful environment to rest. The village is often a stopover for those heading towards the Renjo La Pass, with breathtaking mountain vistas.

Crossing the Renjo La (5340m/17519) & Descend to Gokyo (4790m/15715ft)

The trek from Lumde to Gokyo over Renjo La Pass is long but offering spectacular mountain views and a rich cultural experience. Starting in Lumde, you gradually ascend through rocky terrain to Renjo La Pass at 5,360 meters. The pass provides breathtaking vistas of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes. The descent to Gokyo is steep but rewarding, leading you to the serene lakes and welcoming village of Gokyo. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and warm clothing are essential for this trek.

Morning ascend Gokyo Ri (5357m /17575ft) - Ngozumpa Glacier -Dragnag (4700m/15419ft))

If the view from Renjo La Pass isn’t good, we will wake up early and climb Gokyo Ri for the sunrise view. If the weather is clear at Renjo La, Gokyo Ri won’t be necessary since Renjo La offers better views. Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will ascend Gokyo Ri. Located on the western side of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal and reputed to be the largest in the Himalayas, Gokyo Ri offers stunning vistas. We will then return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, we will continue our trek to Dragnag.

Cross the Cho La (5420m/17782ft) and trek to Dzongla (4830m/15846ft)

Your day starts with breakfast in the morning. You’ll begin trekking early to enjoy the stable weather typical of Himalayan mornings. Depending on snow conditions, it’ll take about two hours to reach Cho La Pass, which stands at 5,420 meters above sea level in Nepal’s Solukhumbu District. This pass links Dzongla village to the east with Thagnak village to the west. After taking in the spectacular views from Cho La Pass, you’ll continue trekking to Dzongla.

Usually, you acclimatize after several passes, but your condition will be assessed today before continuing. If you’re feeling well, we’ll hike to Kala Patthar—a renowned viewpoint offering panoramic views of Mt. Everest and Pumori. Kala Patthar sits on Pumori’s south ridge. After the ascent, we’ll descend to the hotel for breakfast and continue trekking to Lobuche.

This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.

If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.
