Trip Overview

The Nar Phu and Tilicho Lake trek with Mesokantu Pass is a thrilling adventure in the Annapurna region. This trek takes you through remote trails, hidden villages, and high mountain passes.

We start with a day of sightseeing in Kathmandu before taking a jeep ride to Dharapani. From Dharapani, we trek through Nar Phu, following less-traveled paths that lead us to charming villages. These villages give a unique view into traditional Himalayan life, away from the usual tourist routes.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Manaslu and Dhaulagiri peaks, perfect for trekkers and photographers alike.

One of the highlights is the trek through Nar Phu and Tilicho Lake. The Nar region is known for its Tibetan culture and stunning high-altitude scenery. Afterward, we trek to Manang Village and cross Kangla Pass. Next, we head to Tilicho Lake, famous for its clear waters and dramatic landscape.

We’ll spend two nights at Tilicho Base Camp before visiting Tilicho Lake and then crossing the challenging Mesokantu Pass to reach Jomsom. Kangla Pass and Mesokantu Pass are the two main challenges of this trek. Kangla Pass connects Nar Phu Valley with Manang Valley, while Mesokantu Pass, at 5,400 meters, links Tilicho Valley with Jomsom Valley and offers incredible views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Despite the difficulties, crossing these passes provides a great sense of achievement and stunning mountain views.

We then descend to Jomsom, where we can relax and celebrate our journey. Jomsom, with its lively market and beautiful Mustang backdrop, is the perfect place to end our trek. From there, we fly to Pokhara and then back to Kathmandu.

The Nar Phu and Tilicho Lake trek with Mesokantu Pass is an unforgettable adventure, showcasing some of the best experiences the Annapurna region has to offer. If you’d like to visit only Tilicho Lake as part of your Annapurna trek, consider our Annapurna and Tilicho Lake trek. For a more relaxed option, you might enjoy the Langtang and Gosainkund Lake trek.

Day 05

Trek to Meta (3,560m/11,680ft),

Start the day early, as there is a lot of distance to cover. Cross the river and enter the Nar & Phu valleys. Towns on the nearby Annapurna Circuit are relatively well developed, but this is not the case in these valleys.

Today’s trekking route passes through beautiful woods, past small cave shelters and pilgrims’ resting places. Emerging from a narrow canyon, the trail passes under a wide waterfall, from which point the woods become thinner and the vistas wider. The last stretch into Meta involves climbing a steep hill, from which there are amazing views of some of the giant snowy peaks in the area.Meta lies on a big open plain and consists of a few lodges, which are simple but clean and offer good meals.

Day 06

Trek to Phu (4,250m/13,944ft)

Trekking out of Meta, some of the unique, colorful Tibetan Buddhist chortens that Nar and Phu are famous for begin to appear in sight. The trail meanders along the ridge with a good view of the magnificent Nar Phedi Monastery, where you will stay in a few days’ time. After another ninety minutes hiking through scenic canyons and gorges, you’ll reach a monolith that guards the steep trail up to Phu.

From here, you can get your first view of the three villages in the area as well as the old “dzong” (Tibetan-style fortress) and the remains of two ruined forts, impressively situated atop the flatlands before the village. Just before crossing the bridge into Phu, a line of wonderful chortens color the landscape.

After a rest and refreshments, take a short walk up to the famous Tashi Lhakhang Gompa to pay respects to Lama Karma Sonam Rimpoche who came to Nepal with the Dalai Lama in 1959.

Exploring Phu till lunch and trek to Kyang (3740m)

Due to the high altitude, it’s good to have easy day today. Explore the tiny alleyways of the town Till lunch. Phu itself is an interesting village, and half day is well spent sitting with the villagers as they

spin their yak and sheep wool, pound mustard seeds into a paste for oil, or go about their other daily chores. After lunch trek to Kayang (3740m).

Day 08

Trek to Nar Village (4,110m/13,485ft),

Today is a very gentle day. Climb out of Nar Phedi and follow a winding path up a hill towards Nar. Pass a line of wonderfully painted, bamboo-topped chortens on the way into the ancient village. Arrive in the town around lunch time. Even though Nar is not far from the main Annapurna trail, it is rarely visited by trekkers and is about as picturesque as it gets.

Nar is bit more social and lively than Phu, and during the day you may find the village ‘square’ teeming with chatting women with their back-strap looms weaving wool fabric for rugs and blankets.

With a few new teahouses built on the outskirts of Nar, you can stay in a comfortable lodge with an extensive menu.

Trek to Ngawal (3,660m/12,008ft) via the Kang La Pass (5,240m),

Today will be a long day, so get up early to head up to Kang La Pass (5240m), the highest point of the trek and part of the Annapurna Circuit. The pass itself isn’t too tough, but the altitude might make the day feel longer. At the top, you’ll get great views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. The way down is steep, but if you like running on loose rocks, it can be fun! Have lunch on a plateau with a view of the peaks, then continue on to Ngawal.

Ngawal, on the Annapurna Circuit route, is quite different from the ancient villages you’ve seen in the Nar Phu area. Here, you’ll find bigger lodges with more menu choices, and most places will have WiFi and phone signals, making your stay more comfortable.

Today is a major highlight of our trek, but also the toughest. We will cross the highest point of the trek, Mesokanta La. The trail starts off easy, but it becomes a steady climb until we reach the northern moraine of Tilicho. From there, the path becomes a series of switchbacks leading up to the top of Mesokanta La, where the views are incredible.

After taking in the scenery, we will start our descent to Jomsom, which is almost 2000 meters downhill. Be careful on the northern side as it can be slippery if there’s snow or ice. Along the way, we’ll pass by cairns and shepherd sheds. By the end of the day, you’ll be exhausted, so enjoy a hot shower and a good meal in Jomsom as we celebrate completing this challenging part of our trek.

Additional Information

This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.

If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.

What makes this trip different ?

Trekking Team Groups is one of the main supporters of Ambe Foundation, a non-political and non-profit social organization. We contribute our support to the remote village of Nuwakot and different schools like Gramin Devi, Khumbeshwori through donation, sponsorship and partnership in various projects. For details click here what we do and why we do?

Donation

Trekking Team Group donates a percentage of business profits to the foundation on a yearly basis, which supports the ongoing maintenance cost required for Gramin Devi and Khumbeshwori school, a community-based school in Nuwakot.

Sponsorship

One of the major activities of Ambe foundation is the children sponsorship program, which is conducted with full collaboration with Trekking Team Group.

Partnership (Volunteering Program)

The Ambe Volunteer Program, organised by Ambe Foundation and Trekking Team Group, aims to mobilize teams of experts and interested individuals as an effective and economic measure in providing the human capital for education, health and community development in Nuwakot District.
