Trip Overview

“Nepal Beyond the Surface is a soul-stirring journey of cultural immersion, community connection, and mindful travel through the heart of Nepal.”

Positive Impact Tourism Logo - Trekking Team Group Nepal

Nepal Beyond the Surface is a 10-day journey through Nepal that’s not a race through landmarks — it’s a slow, intentional exploration of the country’s soul. Nepal Beyond the Surface invites you to experience the country as more than a destination: it becomes a teacher, a host, and a storybook of living culture. With a focus on community-based travel, cultural immersion, and mindful connection, this itinerary takes you deep into the places where heritage is alive and hospitality is personal.

You’ll begin your Nepal Beyond the Surface experience in Patan, one of the ancient kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley, where stone-paved courtyards and intricate Newari architecture hold centuries of art, devotion, and craftsmanship. From there, the journey continues through the landscapes and legacies that define Nepal Beyond the Surface — including Gorkha, the historic heart of Nepal’s unification, and Pokhara, a tranquil lakeside haven nestled beneath the Himalayas.

One of the core experiences of Nepal Beyond the Surface is a three-day trek through community-run villages. Unlike traditional trekking routes, this part of the journey is not about altitude or endurance, but about walking gently, listening deeply, and forming authentic connections. In villages like Astam, sustainability is lived every day. Solar-powered homes, organic farming, and mountain wisdom come together to create an experience that’s both grounding and inspiring — a hallmark of the Nepal Beyond the Surface philosophy.

Throughout the trip, Nepal Beyond the Surface opens doors to rare cultural encounters: sit with master artisans in the studios of Patan, spin prayer wheels alongside Tibetan pilgrims at Bouddhanath, and climb the sacred stone steps to Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple, where centuries of devotion linger in the air.

Accommodations on Nepal Beyond the Surface have been carefully chosen for authenticity, local ownership, and deep character—from restored heritage homes in the valley to eco-lodges nestled in the hills. Every stay supports local communities, celebrates Nepalese tradition, and allows space for reflection.

This isn’t a trip that fades when the journey ends. Nepal Beyond the Surface stays with you—in the stories shared over tea, the warmth of the people you’ve met, and the stillness you’ve felt as the sun rose over Himalayan peaks.

Nepal Beyond the Surface is more than travel. It’s a reconnection to what truly matters: presence, purpose, and the profound beauty of simplicity.

Departure from home

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu – Drive to Patan and Settle into Heritage Hospitality

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met and transferred directly to the ancient city of Patan, known locally as Lalitpur. Unlike the bustling chaos of central Kathmandu, Patan moves at a different pace—quiet, artistic, and deeply rooted in its cultural heritage. Your stay begins in a family-run heritage guesthouse, a lovingly restored Newari home that preserves the soul of traditional architecture while offering warm, intimate hospitality.

The evening is yours to settle in and breathe deeply after your journey. Perhaps you’ll wander into the courtyard with a cup of chiya (Nepali tea), admiring the intricately carved wooden windows and doorways that tell stories of centuries past. This first night in Patan sets the tone for the rest of the journey: not about rushing from site to site, but about immersing slowly and respectfully into the spirit of a place.

Day 2

Art, Artisans, and Sacred Circles – Patan and Bouddhanath

Your second day begins with an in-depth exploration of Patan’s heart: its old city. Accompanied by a guide who is not just knowledgeable but deeply connected to the city’s artistic heritage, you’ll wander through narrow alleys and sun-drenched courtyards. Patan is a living museum of craftsmanship—here, metalworkers hammer copper and bronze into statues of deities, paubha painters add delicate brushstrokes to traditional Buddhist thangkas, and woodcarvers breathe life into ancient motifs. This isn’t staged tourism. These are real artisans working in family-run studios passed down through generations.

You may sit down with one or two of them, not just to watch but to listen. They’ll share how their work is not merely aesthetic but spiritual—part of their devotion, their discipline, and their identity. And, we will gift them some supplies that we have bought locally on our walk through the city. A visit to the Patan Museum provides context and deepens appreciation for what you’ve seen in the workshops.

In the afternoon, we drive to Bouddhanath Stupa and enjoy our lunch on the rooftop, looking at the square with a great view. After Lunch, we will offer some food to Elderly people who are sitting around the stupa. Towering and serene, its all-seeing eyes gaze out over the Kathmandu Valley. Here, Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhists perform kora, walking clockwise around the stupa while chanting or turning prayer wheels. You’ll join the locals for the evening circumambulation, allowing yourself to fall into step with the sacred rhythm of the place. As dusk descends and butter lamps flicker to life, there’s a deep sense of peace that settles in the soul.

Day 3

Journey to Gorkha – Into the Ancestral Hills

Leaving the Kathmandu Valley behind, you’ll drive westward through lush hills and riverside villages toward Gorkha for about 6 hrs. The road winds through landscapes that gradually shed the urban pulse for the earthy rhythm of the countryside. Gorkha is not a regular stop for tourists, but it holds immense historical and symbolic importance. It was from here that King Prithvi Narayan Shah began his campaign to unify the kingdoms of Nepal in the 18th century. We will stop for a lunch in a local restaurant on the way.

Upon arrival, you’ll visit Gorkha Durbar, an ancient fortified palace perched atop a ridge that commands sweeping views of both the hills and, on clear days, the Himalayas. The walk up is steep, but rewarding—not just for the vistas but for the sense of history echoing through the palace courtyards and shrines. The palace itself is a blend of Hindu and animist traditions, a rare example of architecture and belief seamlessly integrated.

You’ll spend the night in a modest guesthouse run by locals, where meals are simple, often cooked on a wood-fired stove, and eaten under the stars. There is no pretense here, only genuine hospitality and stories shared over dal bhat (lentils and rice). You may also be able to participate to help prepare the meal.

From Gorkha to Pokhara – Lake, Light, and Leisure

After a traditional breakfast, your journey continues toward Pokhara, a city that sits like a jewel beside Phewa Lake and under the shadow of the Annapurna range. Though Pokhara has become increasingly popular among tourists, these itinerary steers clear of the usual bars and backpacker hotspots.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, you’ll check into a lakeside eco-guesthouse—a place chosen not for its luxury, but for its quietude, its views, and its commitment to sustainability. The afternoon is yours to relax. Perhaps you’ll take a canoe onto the calm waters of the lake or simply sit on the veranda watching the sun slip behind Machapuchare, the sacred “Fishtail” peak.

A Trek Through Community Trails – Australian Camp

After a 40-minute drive to Kande, begin a scenic two-hour trek to Australian Camp—a charming hilltop village nestled in lush forest, offering sweeping views of the Himalayas. At the start of the trek, each participant will receive a bag, gloves and a pickup stick to collect any litter along the way, helping us preserve the natural beauty of the trail and make a small but meaningful contribution to the environment.

The trail features a mix of gentle ascents, descents, and stone steps, winding through peaceful natural surroundings. Along the way, keep an eye out for a variety of birds and local wildlife. As you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, including Annapurna South and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain).

Lunch will be served at a family-run teahouse, offering a warm and authentic experience. Afterward, those who are feeling active can enjoy an additional hike, while others may choose to relax at the lodge and take in the panoramic views.

Spend the night in a cozy mountain lodge, savoring a warm meal and the peaceful atmosphere. As darkness falls, the clear mountain sky reveals a dazzling canopy of stars—perfect for stargazing. Trek to Dhampus and further to Astam Village

After breakfast, begin your four-hour trek to Astam Village. The trail gently winds through terraced fields and traditional villages, offering a glimpse into rural Nepali life. Along the way, you’ll pass through Dhampus, a charming Gurung settlement where time seems to move at its own peaceful pace.

Eventually, you’ll reach Astam—a hidden gem perched high above the valley. Known for its commitment to sustainable tourism and ecological living, this village is a true example of harmony between people and nature. Your lodge is solar-powered, meals are prepared with fresh produce from nearby gardens, and your hosts take great pride in caring for their land.

As part of our ongoing effort to leave a positive impact, we’ll also collect trash along the way. Depending on the season, you may have the chance to help in the kitchen or lend a hand on the farm—an enriching way to engage with local life and give back to the community.

From here, begin a leisurely downhill trek toward Hemja (Hymja), passing through lush terraced fields, traditional villages, and forested paths. The trail offers gentle walking and a last glimpse of rural mountain life before reaching the roadhead.

At Hemja, a private vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Pokhara. Once in the city, the rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure—relax by the lakeside, enjoy a café lunch, shop for souvenirs, or simply unwind and reflect on your Himalayan experience.

Sacred Heights and Royal Legacy – Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square

Your day begins after breakfast with a visit to Swayambhunath, also known as the “Monkey Temple.” Perched atop a forested hill, this ancient stupa is one of the oldest and most sacred sites in the Kathmandu Valley. The climb up its stone steps is a pilgrimage in itself, rewarded with panoramic views of the valley below. Prayer flags flutter in the breeze, monkeys dart between temples, and the air is filled with the scent of incense—creating a peaceful space for reflection and gratitude.

From there, descend into the heart of old Kathmandu to explore Kathmandu Durbar Square, a historic complex of royal palaces, courtyards, and temples. Though some structures bear the scars of the 2015 earthquake, they stand as symbols of resilience and living heritage. Hidden behind the main square, quiet courtyards and shrines offer a glimpse into everyday spiritual life.

We’ll share a cup of tea with local residents and listen to their stories—offering a personal connection to the culture and community. You’ll also have the chance to visit the Kumari Ghar, home to the Kumari, Kathmandu’s revered living goddess.

Afterward, stroll through Asan Bazaar—the city’s most vibrant and bustling market. Here, you’ll find everything from spices and textiles to traditional souvenirs. Soak in the sights, sounds, and energy of local life before making your way back to the hotel.

Additional Information

This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.

If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.
