Trip Overview
“Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek: Conquer the Majesty of the World’s Third Highest Peak!”
Kangchenjunga, standing at 8,586 meters, ranks as the third highest mountain in the world. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek in far eastern Nepal is renowned for its stunning mountain massifs, considered among the most beautiful globally. This region is inhabited by local communities such as the Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa people, adding cultural richness to the trekking experience. The main peak of Kanchenjunga is the second highest mountain in Nepal, following Mount Everest.
Trekking through the Kanchenjunga region offers a diverse range of landscapes, from lush tropical jungles with Rhododendron, chestnut, and oak forests to the alpine zone with breathtaking mountain vistas. This area is also famous as the habitat of the Red Panda and other rare snow animals, along with a variety of birds and plant species. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek provides an ideal opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture, traditions, and lifestyles of the villages along the route.
Protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project, this trek is a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventurers seeking pristine wilderness. The trail is known for its length and varied terrain, requiring good physical fitness due to its challenging ups and downs. Initially a remote and less-traveled path, the trek has seen development over time, with small teahouses now available for accommodation. While basic, these teahouses offer a cozy retreat for trekkers amidst the rugged beauty of the Himalayas. We will complement this trek with a visit to the tea gardens in Ilam, renowned as Nepal’s most famous tea garden.
Embarking on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is not just a journey through stunning landscapes but also an exploration of rich cultural heritage and biodiversity, making it a truly unforgettable adventure in Nepal’s eastern wilderness.
If you have less than three weeks of holiday time, consider exploring the Manaslu Trekking, Langtang Gosainkund, or Everest Base Camp treks instead.
Who should take the Kanchenjunga Base camp trek?
- Adventurers seeking a challenging and off-the-beaten-path trekking experience: The Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek is ideal for those who crave adventure in remote and less-traveled regions of Nepal. The trek offers a sense of exploration and discovery as you navigate through rugged terrain and pristine wilderness.
- Nature enthusiasts interested in exploring diverse landscapes and wildlife habitats: This trek is perfect for nature lovers who wish to witness the dramatic transition from lush tropical jungles with vibrant Rhododendrons and oak forests to the serene alpine zones adorned with panoramic mountain views. It’s an opportunity to spot rare wildlife such as the elusive Red Panda and other Himalayan fauna.
- Individuals fascinated by Himalayan culture and eager to interact with local communities: The Kanchenjunga region is home to diverse ethnic groups like the Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa, each with their own unique traditions and lifestyles. Trekkers can immerse themselves in local hospitality, learn about traditional farming practices, and visit ancient monasteries that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Himalayas.
- Trekkers with good physical fitness and stamina, prepared for longer distances and varied terrain: As the trek involves challenging ascents and descents over a longer duration, it requires participants to be physically fit and mentally prepared for the demands of high-altitude trekking. Stamina and resilience are key to enjoying the journey through the stunning yet demanding landscapes of the Kanchenjunga region.
- Trekkers who don’t mind the basic comforts of teahouses and value authentic local experiences: Accommodations along the trek route are basic teahouses, offering simple amenities and local hospitality. This trek appeals to those who prioritize cultural immersion and natural beauty over luxury, and who enjoy the camaraderie of sharing meals with fellow trekkers and locals alike.
- Trekkers who are flexible with time or have longer than three weeks of holiday: Given the length and remoteness of the trek, having flexibility with travel dates or an extended holiday period allows trekkers to fully experience the Kanchenjunga region without time constraints. This flexibility ensures trekkers can adjust to weather conditions or unforeseen delays, enhancing the overall trekking experience.

Trip Reviews
Two of us wanted to do a winter trek to Kanchenjunga and the surrounding areas. Trekking Team Group went to great lengths to find a guide who had been to this area before, and who could understand the local dialect. It was a great winter trek, as remote as it gets in Nepal, and clear skies every day. We knew it was something special when the experienced guide and porter took just as many photos as we did! This was the second trek we did with TTG, and we’d definitely contact them for future adventures.-Alewyn Muller from South Africa

Great trek and fantastic people. Cannot recommend these guys enough, we picked the company off TripAdvisor because of their rating. From the word go, the exact price including what was included in the total price and what we had to pay for was explained. Very professional, honest and trust worthy. Our trek was pretty remote and we had to have a guide, which was part of the permit deal, unlike Everest base camp and Annapurna treks.
Our guide Nima a local of the area, was brilliant, telling us about the local culture, and supportive, keeping us right, especially above the 4000m mark.
The teahouses were pretty decent considering where we were. The chosen tea houses appeared to be the best in each village. And all under 4000m had really decent options other that just dal baht.
There were very few fellow trekkers on this trek (and not WiFi or phone coverage) which was pretty magic. However all of them appeared to have significantly more for their trips than us.
Word of advice go with a reputable Nepalese company. All the European, UK, US and Aus/NZ companies outsource to them but charge you thousands extra for the privilege! Thank you Shree for the great trip!

This was my second trek in Nepal, having done the very popular Kala Pattar back in 2010. Kanchenjunga was always going to be different, being far less commercialized and more complicated to get to. TTG guys took this all in their stride and to be honest I was completely unaware of what had to be done until we talked about it on the trek. Our lead was Lakpa and he, with the whole team, could not have been more helpful. When we stopped for the night food just appeared as if by magic, even in the higher sections where there were almost no facilities. Every day it was tasty and more importantly nutritious and it set us up for the next day. It was a pleasure to share the Himalayas with these guys and I will definitely go with them again next time. Anyone can book with Trekking Team Group with complete confidence that their dreams will be delivered (plus more they didn’t even dream)

I trekked the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area with Trekking Team Group in Nov 2015. Kanchenjunga is an incredibly remote and isolated area, we spent 3 amazing weeks in some of the most unspoilt land imaginable. This was all due to the incredible organisation and local knowledge of both the Thamel based office staff at Trekking Team Group and their highly qualified and experienced guides Ram Mohan. A big thank you must also go out to all of the incredible guys that worked as our porters carrying our gear, setting up campsites, cooking food, entertaining us with their fun loving sense of humour, and showing us more care and compassion beyond what you would normally expect. I would recommend Trekking Team Group to all and any of my friends, family and anyone else considering travelling in Nepal.

I do not believe I could have had a more positive trekking experience than I did with Shree at Trekking Team Group. If you are looking for an authentic, well-run, and friendly trekking company, I assure you that you have found it here. Shree, the founder and a native to Nepal, has had an impressive amount of trekking and guiding experience in his time and became a great friend of ours by the trek’s end, as did our friendly and knowledgeable guides, who knew much about the region we were traveling in, both ecologically and culturally – great people to talk to and to have as leaders!! We also had a great team of porters who helped us in every moment. I am certain you can never go wrong with a trek through TTG, and it is now on my bucket list to come back and do another trek with them with family or friends!

Additional Information
This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.
If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.
What makes this trip different ?
Trekking Team Groups is one of the main supporters of Ambe Foundation, a non-political and non-profit social organization. We contribute our support to the remote village of Nuwakot and different schools like Gramin Devi, Khumbeshwori through donation, sponsorship and partnership in various projects. For details click here what we do and why we do?
Donation
Trekking Team Group donates a percentage of business profits to the foundation on a yearly basis, which supports the ongoing maintenance cost required for Gramin Devi and Khumbeshwori school, a community-based school in Nuwakot.
Sponsorship
One of the major activities of Ambe foundation is the children sponsorship program, which is conducted with full collaboration with Trekking Team Group.
Partnership (Volunteering Program)
The Ambe Volunteer Program, organised by Ambe Foundation and Trekking Team Group, aims to mobilize teams of experts and interested individuals as an effective and economic measure in providing the human capital for education, health and community development in Nuwakot District.
