Trip Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek, part of the Great Himalayan Trail, offers stunning scenery, rich culture, and easy access, making it an increasingly popular trekking destination in Nepal. Despite its growing fame, it sees fewer trekkers compared to other established routes.

Manaslu Circuit Trek showcases breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu (8163m) and the Ganesh Himal massifs. Along the trail, you’ll encounter fascinating Buddhist villages that blend Hindu and Tibetan religions and cultures. The trail follows the spectacular Budhigandaki River from Arughat to its source just below the Larkya Pass (5106m).

Starting at a low altitude of around 825m, the trek ascends through diverse landscapes, from green countryside and lush forests to spectacular high-altitude terrains, with paths running alongside glaciers. Key highlights of the trek include:

  • Manaslu Base Camp: A side trip offering incredible close-up views of Mount Manaslu.
  • Pungen Gompa: A serene monastery with panoramic views, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
  • Acclimatization Day in Samagaon: A rest day to explore the village, visit the local monasteries, and adjust to the altitude.
  • Samdo: A charming village near the Tibetan border, offering insights into local culture and stunning landscapes.
  • Dharmasala (Larke Phedi): The last stop before crossing Larkya Pass, providing basic accommodation and a chance to rest before the challenging ascent.

The highlight of the trek is crossing the Larkya Pass (5106m). This can be tough when there is snow, but the stunning landscape, with the mighty Himalayas towering above and spectacular glaciers along the way, makes it an unforgettable experience. The descent from the pass offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, adding to the adventure’s allure.

The descent passes through beautiful alpine meadows at Bimtang before joining the main Annapurna Circuit route for Besisahar.

Why the Manaslu Circuit Trek of the Great Himalayan Trail is a Must-Do Trek?

  • Remote and Pristine Landscapes: Offers pristine, less-trekked paths with untouched landscapes and biodiversity of great Himalayan trail.
  • Cultural Diversity: Encounter diverse cultures, blending Tibetan Buddhism with Hinduism in remote villages.
  • Larke La Pass: Cross the challenging Larke La Pass (5,106m), providing breathtaking Himalayan views.
  • Less Crowded: Compared to popular trails, Manaslu Circuit sees fewer trekkers, offering a more serene experience.
  • Varied Terrain: Trek through lush forests, alpine meadows, and high mountain passes, showcasing varied natural beauty.
  • Community-Focused Tourism: Supports local communities through sustainable tourism initiatives, contributing to rural economies.

The Manaslu Circuit trek can easily be combined with the Tsum Valley. Whether you have more or less time than our planned itinerary, please stay in touch. We’re happy to customize a tour according to your preferences and budget.

Rest day for acclimatization walk to Birendra Tal and Manaslu Base Camp (4800m/15748ft)

Today is a rest day in Samagaon, dedicated to acclimatization. This is essential to prepare both physically and mentally for the upcoming journey and to adapt to the changing climate and environment. You have two options for day trips:

  1. Easier Option: Take a trek to Pungen Gompa with a packed lunch. Enjoy the stunning views of Manaslu while exploring this serene monastery.
  2. Harder Option: Venture to Manaslu Base Camp, which includes a glacier walk, a visit to Birendra Tal, and incredible views of Manaslu.

Both trips offer the opportunity to marvel at thousands of mani stones adorned with Buddhist texts and images. If neither option appeals to you, you can stay in Samagaon and explore the village. Here, you can see Sherpa women in traditional clothes and ornaments and visit the impressive Sama Gompa. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the granite pyramid of Manaslu throughout the day.

Trek to Bimtang (3740m/12270ft) over Larkya La (5106m/16751ft)

Today’s trek is the longest and the highlight of the entire trip, as we will cross the Larke La pass. The day begins with a climb to the north, reaching the ablation valley of the Larkya Glacier. Along the way, you’ll pass small frozen lakes and enjoy views of Cho Danda and Larkya Peak.

The trail crosses boulder fields and crests several times. As you approach the summit cairn adorned with fluttering prayer flags, you’ll have a moment to celebrate this achievement and capture some photos. From the top, you’ll be treated to incredible panoramic views of Himalayan peaks, including Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II.

After the celebration, the trail descends steeply, likely over snow and then scree, leading to the ablation valley trail toward Dangboche Kharka. This is a good spot to rest before continuing the descent to the welcoming lodges of Bimthang, situated in a broad and level ablation valley. It will be a long, challenging, but ultimately rewarding day of trekking in the Himalayas.

Rest day at Bimthang

Today is a rest day in Bimthang, allowing you to explore the area and its beautiful surroundings, including a nearby lake. Some people wonder if this rest day is really necessary, especially since many trekkers prefer to head back quickly after crossing Larke La. However, this extra day is useful in case of bad weather, making it a valuable part of the itinerary.

The scenery is breathtaking, offering stunning vistas of mountains such as Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Kangaru, Himlung, Cheo Himal, Lamjung Himal, Phungi Himal, and others. Take this opportunity to relax and soak in the incredible landscape.

You’ll walk across fields before making a steep climb over a ridge. The trail then descends in a wide arc to the river bank at 2580m. Shortly after, you’ll arrive at the village of Gho, where we’ll take a lunch break. After lunch, continue walking to Dharapani, where we will spend the night.

After the peaceful trek around Manaslu, reaching Dharapani might feel crowded as it connects to the popular Annapurna Circuit trail.

Additional Information

This is ADVENTURE travel, and many of the destinations on this site are in remote, underdeveloped areas where unpredictability is the norm. Despite careful planning and organization, our adventure trips can’t be taken for granted like regular trips. Many of the places we visit lack the emergency health and safety services you’re used to in the developed world. Internal flights can be canceled, road transport is often uncomfortable and unreliable, and hotel standards may not match those of the West.

If you’re not prepared for this, you shouldn’t travel with us. The unpredictability also means that our itineraries are statements of intent, not contractual obligations. Factors such as weather, transport difficulties, and political instability might require us to change any itinerary. The trip leader will make any necessary changes after consulting with the group. Such changes are rarely significant, and we always do our best to minimize their impact. However, we cannot be held responsible for changes or delays, regardless of their cause.

What makes this trip different ?

Trekking Team Groups is one of the main supporters of Ambe Foundation, a non-political and non-profit social organization. We contribute our support to the remote village of Nuwakot and different schools like Gramin Devi, Khumbeshwori through donation, sponsorship and partnership in various projects. For details click here what we do and why we do?

Donation

Trekking Team Group donates a percentage of business profits to the foundation on a yearly basis, which supports the ongoing maintenance cost required for Gramin Devi and Khumbeshwori school, a community-based school in Nuwakot.

Sponsorship

One of the major activities of Ambe foundation is the children sponsorship program, which is conducted with full collaboration with Trekking Team Group.

Partnership (Volunteering Program)

The Ambe Volunteer Program, organised by Ambe Foundation and Trekking Team Group, aims to mobilize teams of experts and interested individuals as an effective and economic measure in providing the human capital for education, health and community development in Nuwakot District.
